University of Minnesota PubH 6150 “Interdisciplinary Evaluation of Occupational Health and Safety Field Problems” students toured UMN’s Fairview Hospital on February 7th, 2017, guided by internationally recognized hospital environmental specialist, Mr. Andrew Streifel. As part of this research-to-practice course, the behind-the-scenes tour gave students the opportunity to see some of the unique safety and health challenges a hospital environment presents.
Mr. Streifel shared his extensive knowledge about the hospital and explained some of the approaches to meeting these challenges at Fairview. An expert on designing ventilation systems for infection control, Mr. Streifel showcased one of the suites where the ventilation is designed to ensure both patient and employee health are protected. This tour of Fairview, an integrated academic health system gave students the opportunity to see theory translated into practice.
