Kate Serrano, MPH, CIH, CSP
Kate is a PhD student at the University of Minnesota in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene track. She has worked as an industrial hygienist in various sectors including occupational health research, Department of Defense manufacturing, and Department of Energy R&D.
Kate has a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and a Master of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene from the University of Arizona. She is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional with more than 10 years of industrial hygiene experience. She also has seven years of experience managing a martial arts school.
Kate has a passion for improving workplace health and safety. In the past, she worked at National Jewish Health (NJH) in the Division of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences as an Industrial Hygienist. Her job at NJH involved research which included several Susan Harwood OSHA Training Grants, and management of a large grant funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In addition, she managed and conducted research for several grants from the Department of Justice to evaluate exposures to officers responding to illicit drug busts. She has experience in auditing including: internal, corporate, state, OSHA compliance, and OSHA VPP.
Currently, Kate is an industrial hygienist at Los Alamos National Lab. She was recently awarded a pilot project grant from MCOHS-ERC to fund her PhD research project titled, “Characterization of Exposures during Metal Additive Manufacturing (CHEM AM).”
