Susan Arnold and Marc Hilmeyer awarded IEM COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant

Dr. Susan Arnold, ESSI Director, and Dr. Marc Hillmeyer, Professor in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota, were awarded a COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant from the Institute for Engineering in Medicine (IEM) to characterize filter media used in alternative PPE. Leveraging resources and expertise in the UMN Characterization Facility in the College of Science and Engineering, we will gain a better understanding of this material’s structure and performance in reducing transmission of particles small enough to penetrate the deep lung.

IEM, in partnership with CTSI, MnRI, and the Medical School, invested over $300,000 in efforts to combat COVID-19 with diagnostics, medical devices, PPE, disease and biophysical modeling, and other projects. Learn more about the funded projects at: iem.umn.edu/iem-covid19-awards.
